Vermont posts lowest jobless rate among all states in August

Vermont posted the lowest jobless rate among all states in August at 2.1%; Iowa posted the second-lowest at 2.5%, according to data released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Alaska posted the highest at 6.2%.

Unemployment rates decreased in five states during August. The rates fell by 0.2 percentage point each in Alabama, Illinois and South Carolina. They fell by 0.1 point each in both Maine and Virginia.

The jobless rate rose in three states; Delaware, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The increases were each by 0.1 percentage point.

In terms of jobs, the largest jobs gains were posted in California (+34,500), Florida (+22,500) and Georgia (+20,800). The largest percentage gains in jobs occurred in Kansas (+0.6%), Georgia (+0.5%) and Arizona (+0.4%).
