US Staffing Market To Reach $145 Billion in Revenue

Mountain View, California — September 19, 2017 — Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions has released its latest US Staffing Industry Market Estimates and Forecast report. Published twice annually, the US Forecast report covers estimates and forecasts for the staffing industry by revenue and segment, with additional labor market information, including regional and historical data.

SIA continues to predict that the US staffing market will grow modestly in 2017 and 2018, with 3% growth in total staffing revenue forecasted per year. As such, it is projected that the US staffing market will reach $145 billion in total revenue in 2018.

US Revenue Growth ($ Billions), September 2017 Forecast

  2016 2017P 2018P
Temporary Staffing 118.7 122.1 125.6
Place & Search 18.1 18.6 19.5
Total Staffing 136.8 140.7 145.1

With performance varying across geographies and occupational segments, recent trends range from double-digit growth for travel nurses and education to declines in office/clerical. We project 3% growth in temporary staffing in 2018, and 5% in place & search, which has a greater mix of professional staffing.

“At $145 Billion in US revenue, the large size and scope of the staffing industry highlights its importance to the overall economy,” said Barry Asin, President of SIA. "The modest growth ahead that we see for the industry in 2018 is typical of an economy this late in the cycle where labor is in short supply.”

The full US Staffing Industry Market Estimates and Forecast: September 2017 Update report is available for SIA Corporate and CWS Council Members. Information from the report will be covered in SIA’s September 19th Staffing Industry Report Webinar.
