South Korea – Number of temporary employees steady in August, unemployment falls

The number of temporary employees in South Korea fell to 4.85 million in August 2019, a decrease of 0.04% when compared to the same period last year, according to data published from Statistics Korea.

When compared to the previous month, the number of temporary employees in South Korea fell by 1.24%.

At the same time, the unemployment rate stood at 3.0% in August, down 1.0% year-on-year. The number of unemployed persons totaled 858,000 in August, which decreased 275,000 persons or 24.3%, year-on-year.

The number of employed persons increased by 452,000 or 1.7%, year-on-year, to 27.35 million.

The biggest increase in employment was seen in Business, personal, public service & others (4.0%), followed by agriculture, forestry & fishing, which recorded an increase of 3.7%. The biggest decrease was seen in electricity, transport, communication & finance (-1.4%).

South Korea’s labour force participation rate stood at 63.3% in August, up 0.1%, year-on-year.
