Japan – Government to ease restrictions on unskilled foreign workers to offset labour shortages (Reuters)

01 June 2018

Japan’s government is planning to ease restrictions on unskilled foreign workers in five sectors hit hard by labour shortages, reports Reuters. The country has been facing a labour crunch due to a shrinking and aging population. The government hopes to attract 500,000 foreign workers through fiscal 2025 in sectors such as nursing, shipbuilding, lodging as well as construction and agricultural industries. Foreign workers can obtain a work permit in Japan for up to five years if they pass language and occupational tests. A record 1.28 million foreigners were working in Japan in 2017, 18% higher than in 2016 and the highest figure since records began in 2008.
