Upwork to charge freelancers for bidding on jobs; virtual tokens to cost 15 cents

April 04, 2019

Online staffing provider Upwork Inc. (NASD: UPWK) yesterday announced it will begin charging freelancers to bid on jobs.

Freelancers on the Upwork platform use virtual tokens called “Connects” to submit proposals for posted jobs. They previously received 60 free Connects each month but starting in May, Connects will cost 15 cents each. Freelancers need between one and six Connects to submit a proposal for most job posts; those submitted in response to invitations from clients will continue to be free.

“As we recently shared, Upwork is focused on professional freelancers and prioritizing efforts that encourage higher quality projects and client relationships,” Jessica Tiwari, Upwork’s VP of product, wrote in a blog post. “After considering many different options, we’re making this adjustment based on consultation with both freelancers and clients who use Upwork.”

Upwork expects that that the change will result in freelancers and agencies submitting fewer proposals and focusing on job posts they’re most qualified for and most likely to win. Additionally, clients will have a smaller selection of more relevant proposals to review, making it easier for them to identify the best talent for their projects.

Upwork ranks as the largest business-focused human cloud platform with $1.36 billion in 2017 gross spend, according to Staffing Industry Analysts’ “The Gig Economy and Human Cloud Landscape: 2018 Update” report.

UpWork has recently changed it's connects pricing structure from free to paid, this impacts millions of freelancers.

This impacts all of us directly.

I have created a short 1-minute survey to understand how clients and freelancers are going to take this.
Please, fill this survey and I will send it to UpWork management team on 19th Apr. with the results.
