Report ranks largest US healthcare staffing firms

August 05 2015

AMN Healthcare Services Inc. (NYSE: AHS) ranks as the largest healthcare staffing firm in the US, according to Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2015 report on the largest healthcare staffing firms. CHG Healthcare ranked second. Cross Country Healthcare, now ranked No. 3, acquired Medical Staffing Network last year.

Thirty-four staffing firms each generated at least $50 million in healthcare temporary staffing revenue in 2014; combined, they generated $6.5 billion and comprised 61% of the market. AMN and CHG each garnered 9% market share.

The report also provides four rankings of the largest firms in each healthcare sub-segment: travel nurse, per diem nurse, locum tenens and allied healthcare. This year’s report ranks 21 travel nurse firms that generated in total $2.1 billion, 12 per diem nurse staffing firms that generated $1.0 billion, 10 locum tenens firms that generated $1.9 billion, and 21 allied healthcare staffing firms that generated $1.5 billion.

By sub-segment, AMN Healthcare also ranked as the largest travel nurse firm with 20% market share and as the largest allied healthcare staffing firm with 5% market share.

CHG Healthcare ranked as the largest locum tenens firm in the US with 31% market share in locum tenens revenue; the report notes the firm achieved significant organic growth over the past decade with revenue growth not aided by acquisitions.

Maxim Healthcare Services ranked as the largest per diem nursing firm with 10% market share.

“Although 2014 got off to a slow start, the second half of the year saw strong demand for the staffing of healthcare professionals, resulting in solid revenue results across the healthcare staffing industry,” said Timothy Landhuis, research manager at Staffing Industry Analysts. “As one example of the boom in healthcare staffing demand, this year’s report estimates that there were seven firms that generated more than $100 million in travel nurse staffing revenue in 2014.”
