Online jobs index edges up in August

The Conference Board’s measure of online job ads edged up in August, the organization reported. Its Help Wanted OnLine index rose to a reading of 103.6 in August (July 2018 = 100) from a reading of 103.2 in July.

The index is up 3.5% compared to a year ago.

Most regions and states showed little change in online help-wanted ads.

In the Midwest, the number of online job ads in rose 2.9% in Iowa month over month and 2.5% in Ohio.

In the Northeast, online job ads increased 3.3% in Maine and 2.3% in Connecticut. In the South, Kentucky rose 3.0% and Texas rose 1.1%. In the West, Wyoming and Nevada increased by 2.6% and 2.0% respectively.

By occupation, online job ads in the professional occupational category decreased by 3.1% in legal and 1.1% in education. In the services/production occupational category, protective services rose 4.9%; personal care and services, as well as the sales category, both rose 2.5%.
