National Locum Tenens Week starts today

August 12, 2019

Today kicks of the third annual National Locum Tenens Week aimed at recognizing the importance of temporary physicians, the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations announced.

report by Staffing Industry Analysts estimates the locum tenens staffing market will have revenue of $4.0 billion this year, an increase of 3% over 2018.

“NALTO is once again honored to lead the healthcare staffing industry in expressing our heartfelt appreciation for locum tenens physicians,” NALTO President John Daniel said. “Locum Tenens Week is an opportunity to thank our providers in every community for their dedication to the medical facilities and patients they serve each day.”

NALTO cited recent studies that 90% of US healthcare facilities use locum tenens providers each year, and more than 50,000 physicians work locum tenens assignments each year.

National Locum Tenens Week takes place the second full week of August each year.

Healthcare staffing firm CHG Healthcare reported the week allows the staffing industry a forum to collectively recognize the role locum tenens doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners play in the delivery of medicine.

“My work life was in disarray until I found locum tenens. I am now my own boss and treating patients in underserved areas is my passion,” full-time locum tenens physician Ripal Patel said in a quote to CHG. “Working locums lets me travel, focus on patients and still have time for medical missions and teaching. It has been the best career choice I could have made.”
