Exemptions for some industries — but not ride-sharing firms — in final amendments to California’s IC bill (The Sacramento Bee)

September 09, 2019

Lawmakers on Friday submitted what the author’s office describes as the final round of amendments to California’s high-profile Assembly Bill 5, which would codify the more strict “ABC” test for independent contractor misclassification into law. The Sacramento [California] Bee reported dozens of professions, from real estate agents to dog groomers, secured carve-outs from the proposed legislation; but others, including gig economy drivers and newspaper carriers, weren’t given exemptions.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom came out in favor of the bill last week, and lawmakers must make a final decision this week.
