Contingent worker strategy has to continually evolve: CWS Summit

Online staffing and the future of work were topics that got attendees’ attention at Staffing Industry Analysts’ CWS Summit North America conference aimed at contingent workforce managers coming to a close this afternoon in San Diego. Enterprise staffing buyers have concerns with implementing human cloud platforms. “Lean in and start small” was advice given by buyers who had already gone down this path.

Challenges to use of online staffing by enterprise firms  include a reluctance by busy hiring managers to learn a new system and do things in a different way from what they are used to. Other trends heard at the conference were direct sourcing, merging programs in cases of m&a, VMS modernization and more.

Eric Gregg, CEO of ClearlyRated, a staffing firm rating company, said hiring mangers need to focus more on the work that needs to be done than how workers are engaged. Gregg made the comment during a panel discussion on Monday led by Subadhra Sriram, editor and publisher, media products, at SIA. 

Separately, Staffing Industry Analysts’ Collaboration in the Gig Economy conference is set to kick off today at the same site in San Diego to bring together the workforce ecosystem, including buyers of staffing services. 

The conference will focus on the latest technology and trends, including the human cloud, comprised of online staffing, crowdsourcing and online work services (Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc.) that serve both the business-to-business and business-to-consumer segments.

This year’s theme for the Collaboration in the Gig Economy conference is “Connecting and Optimizing the Talent Supply Chain.”

Some 53 million Americans did gig work in 2018, or 34% of the workplace. SIA defines “gig work” as all types of contingent labor, including statement-of-work consultants, directly hired temporary workers, independent contractors, human cloud (online staffing) workers and traditional temporary workers from staffing firms.
