Canadian job vacancies outpace employment for 11th successive quarter

September 20, 2019

Year-over-year growth in job vacancies in Canada during the second quarter outpaced growth in employment for the 11th successive quarter, Statistics Canada reported today.

The number of job vacancies in the second quarter rose 6.4% to 581,600 year over year. Nearly 70% of the increase was in Quebec.

Statistics Canada reported the job vacancy rate of 3.5% in the second quarter was the highest since comparable data became available in 2015. The job vacancy rate represents the number of job vacancies expressed as a percentage of labor demand — the sum of all occupied and vacant jobs.
