US Staffing Market to Surpass $150 Billion in Revenue

Mountain View, California — April 26, 2018 — Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions has released its latest US Staffing Industry Market Estimates and Forecast report. Published twice annually, the US Forecast report covers estimates and forecasts for the staffing industry by revenue and segment, with additional labor market information, including regional and historical data.

SIA has revised its previous prediction of 3% growth in the US staffing market in 2018 to 4%, with an improving economy as the primary driver for this slight acceleration in the current forecast. SIA projects 3% growth in total staffing revenue for 2019, and for the US staffing market to surpass $150 billion in total revenue next year.

US Revenue Growth ($ Billions), May 2018 Forecast

  2017 2018P 2019P
Temporary Staffing 123.7 128.1 132.1
Direct Hire / Retained Search  19.1 20.2 21.1
Total Staffing 142.8 148.3 153.2

We project 4% growth in temporary staffing in 2018 with substantial variation in performance by occupational segment, from declines in office/clerical to double-digit growth in locum tenens. Starting with this forecast report, SIA is now making growth projections for various occupational segments within the direct hire market as well.

“One headwind to temporary staffing market growth has been a scarcity of labor supply, noted in a variety of occupations from construction to highly skilled IT roles. Consequently, we are at last starting to see broadly (but not universally) reported signs of bill rate increases,” said Tony Gregoire, Research Director at SIA.
