US Staffing Market to Grow 3% in 2017

Professional Staffing Market Share Increasing

Mountain View, California — April 12, 2017 — Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions has released its latest US Staffing Industry Forecast report. Published twice annually, the Forecast report covers estimates and forecasts for the staffing industry by revenue and segment, with additional labor market information, including regional employment trends and historical data.

According to report estimates, the US temporary staffing market and the overall staffing market- which includes place and search- both grew 3% in 2016. SIA predicts that both temporary staffing and overall staffing will grow 3% in 2017 as well, with variances across occupational segments, from projected double-digit growth in travel nursing and education to declines in office/clerical and legal segments. Both the 2016 estimates and 2017 forecasts have been downgraded from previous predictions of 4% as staffing trends weakened in the latter half of 2016 despite the confluence of a slight improvement in GDP, generally a coincident economic indicator; and with an expectation that growth in 2017 may not accelerate as quickly as prior estimates suggest.

Temporary staffing is also predicted to grow 3% in 2018 to $126.8 billion. However, with a stronger recovery projected for place and search, the overall staffing market is likely to achieve 4% growth to reach $146.6 billion.

“Despite the somewhat slower growth, the staffing market is on track to hit record size in terms of revenue in the next two years,” said Barry Asin, President of SIA.

The report indicates that, in line with growth trends over recent years, professional jobs will continue to comprise an increasing share of the US temporary staffing market going forward.  With the temporary penetration rate (the share employment made up by the temporary staffing industry) hovering above 2% at peak levels, there may be more secular growth needed to surpass this.
